Now having experienced the unbelievable urge to push for myself, I find it laughable that women are told not to push and wait for the doctor.

First we don’t push them out fast enough, now we’re pushing them out TOO fast?! What do you want?!?!!

I have heard this numerous times as a doula. But then when the OB arrives it is suddenly, PUSH, PUSH! Get the baby out ASAP, so the OB doesn’t waste her valuable time.

That happened to my mother with the birth of my sister. She was telling the nurse she needed to push but they’d forgotten to call her doctor so she was given an epidural! Needless to say, even 32 years later she’s not happy about it.

During my second birth, after the nurses who were physically pinning me down and preventing me from effectively pushing went off to schedule my c-section (because I was not “capable” of having a baby vaginally), I pushed the baby to crowning as another nurse walked into the room. She and my husband just stood there, holding the baby in, yelling for a doctor. How ridiculous is that?? The doctor wasn’t there the whole labor, the whole time I was pushing, and I’ve done all the work, but now no one can catch my baby unless Dr. God is there??

I still find it so sad that the Nurses get in so much trouble if mum has bub before the Midi or Ob get there… Like we can help it! Hugs to the poor nurses…
