“…If You Don’t Trust Me To Make Decisions…”
“Listen, if you don’t trust me to make decisions, you need to find another Doctor.”- OB to patient when asked about flexibility around options for delivery.
A doctor who says that has just proven that he can NOT be trusted!

Hey at least then you know they are supremely stupid and without any ethics whatsoever. Better then than later (even if then is during labour)

I also had this said to me by my OB during my first pregnancy. She also recommended a C-Section for me at 11weeks because of “ease of recovery for first time moms.” I am forever grateful for her inflexibility because I explored my options and have since had 3 beautiful home births

“Ease of recovery?”
Um yeah, I don’t think so. Every person I know who has had an uncomplicated vaginal birth, and also had a c-section said they would NEVER choose surgery, due to the difficulty of recovering from major surgery while also caring for a newborn.

Ease of recovery, huh? Yeah, c-section recovery is AWESOME! I totally loved not being able to sit up, needing help getting my own baby in and out of bed, and being bedridden for two weeks! That was WAY better than my VBACs when I was up and about almost immediately! (Being able to walk and care for your own child is SO over-rated!!)

I had a doctor say almost exactly this to me when I was about 7 weeks pregnant with my 2nd baby. I was new in town and looking for a family doctor, partly for the long term and also because I needed a doctor to prescribe some anti-nausea medication I required. She wanted to take a prenatal history and I explained that was unnecessary, as I’d chosen midwifery care for my pregnancy. She literally threw my chart across the room and said, “If you can’t trust me to care for your pregnancy, how can you trust me for anything?!” And, the clear answer was, I couldn’t. I walked out, never saw her again (though I did get my Rx and I also wrote her a letter explaining why what she said was totally inappropriate).

Well, I guess if the doctor can’t be bothered to recognize her patients have rights to make decisions about their births, and be informed, then maybe another doctor is their best choice! Yikes!
