I wanted to allow the cord to stop pulsing before it was cut AND I wanted to hold my baby right away. She informed me that I could do one or the other, insisting that if she didn't cut the cord, she would hold the baby at a level lower than the rest of my body until the cord was cut. I chose my battles and told her to cut the cord and give me my baby, but I'm still shaking my head over her logic. I had a resident tell me the exact same thing. I guess those primitive people learned quickly to start gnawing through the cord as soon as baby was born, because otherwise baby mysteriously died. That's my theory anyway.
