"…The Baby's Blood Will Run Back Into Mom."
“If you hold the baby up too high all the baby’s blood will run back into mom.” -OB explaining why immediate cord clamping is needed.
heard this so many times…..along with the jaundice one…and the infamous..”If you have delayed cord clamping the baby will get too much blood, have a stroke and die..do you want your baby to have a stroke?” Nice.

It’s amazing the human race did more than just barely survive. I guess those primitive people learned quickly to start gnawing through the cord as soon as baby was born, because otherwise baby mysteriously died. That’s my theory anyway. Still trying to piece together how the human race lasted long enough the figure out the key importance of early cord clamping.

I had a resident tell me the exact same thing. I wanted to allow the cord to stop pulsing before it was cut AND I wanted to hold my baby right away. She informed me that I could do one or the other, insisting that if she didn’t cut the cord, she would hold the baby at a level lower than the rest of my body until the cord was cut. I chose my battles and told her to cut the cord and give me my baby, but I’m still shaking my head over her logic.

except that instead of running back into mom she said the blood would run back out of the placenta and “drain the baby”

And then the next Dr. you talk to will tell you that you can’t do delayed cord clamping because the baby will get too MUCH blood and develop jaundice…so which one is it?
